Sussex finish strong on day one of Second XI Championship match with Northants

Sussex are giving a trial to Australian fast bowler Allan Wise.

The 30-year-old from Melbourne played for Victoria before joining South Australia and is the leading wicket-taker in the Scottish Cricket Premier League this season having taken 18 at 11.72 apiece for Grange.

Left-armer Wise is 6ft 7in and made an immediate impression by removing Northamptonshire opener Stephen Peters on the first day of the 2nd XI Championship match at Hove.

Ben Brown had earlier scored 101 and in-form Ollie Rayner hit a rapid 82 before Sussex declared on 383-7. Northants were 28-1 in reply.

Brown hit 13 fours and a six and shared in a sixth-wicket stand of 142 with Rayner, who cracked 15 fours.

Michael Thornely (67) and Joe Gatting (70) had given Sussex the perfect platform with an opening partnership of 130.
