Sussex seconds denied

Spinners Tom Smith and Ollie Rayner claimed 5-74 and 4-88 respectively to take Sussex to the verge of a first 2nd XI Championship win of the season.

But Hampshire, set 325 to win, held on for a draw at the Rose Bowl by finishing on 248-9.

Carl Hopkinson followed his first-innings century by hitting an unbeaten 96 as Sussex, resuming on 54-1, declared on 226-3.

Hopkinson’s runs came from only 80 balls as he fired a dozen fours and three sixes.

Opener Joe Gatting, 26 overnight, went on to make 44 and Ben Brown’s unbeaten 44 included four fours and a six.
