Women win second game
Colvin takes 6 for 13
12th May 2009
The Sussex Women’s team continued their campaign to retain the County Championship with a comprehensive win on Sunday at Brighton College against Berkshire.
Brighton College is renowned for its batting tracks and with this in mind, Berkshire won the toss and decided to bat.
But the pitch was doing something early on allowing the bowlers to take wickets at regular intervals. Charlotte Burton took the first wicket in the fourth over with a fantastic one handed catch in gully from Caroline Atkins. This lead to the world number 1 batsman to come in, Claire Taylor, but with some good, consistent bowling from Alexia Walker she soon took the wicket of Taylor, by bowling her with a good delivery.
It was then the turn of spinner, Holly Colvin to do her magic, and she did. She bowled consistently well, bowling lots of dot balls and putting the batsman under a lot of pressure. This helped Holly take wickets regularly, leaving her with figures of 6 for 13.
Again Laura Marsh bowled alongside Holly and bowled a good line and length and got quite a bit of turn, also causing problems for the batsman and was unlucky not to take more wickets, but finished on figures of 2 for 4.
It was another great bowling performance from Sussex, leaving Berkshire all out for 87.
In reply, the Sussex start got off slowly due to some good bowling from Berkshire’s opening bowler Isa Ghua and with the loss of Caroline Atkins early on.
The wicket was still doing something for the bowlers, but Sarah Taylor and Rosalie Birch looked like they were going to build an innings like they did at Surrey the week before, but Sarah Taylor was soon out on 24.
Another couple of wickets fell quickly but Rosalie Birch remained at the crease and worked the ball round for some quick singles. Rosalie was joined by Holly Colvin and with some calm and sensible batting both players led Sussex to another victory, with Rosalie finishing on 26 not out. The pick of the bowlers for Berkshire was Yvonne Craven who bowled 1 for 15 off her 10 overs.
Sussex now have a week off before the travel down to Taunton on the 24th May to take on Somerset.
