WOMEN & GIRLS: Clubs come together at the Christ's Hospital W&Gs Club Day
At the end of every season the Sussex Cricket Board hosts the Women & Girls club day at Horsham CC, which this year was sponsored by Christ's Hospital.
The Women & Girls club day sees all the winners of the West and East area leagues come together and play the finals, along with the Women's cup final.
This years club day was an even bigger event as five finals took place in one day, along with all the presentations of the trophies won throughout the season. Sussex CCC Chief Executive Zac Toumazi and the SCB Head of Recreational Cricket, Tim Shutt were in charge of the barbeque.
The day started early with the under 13 softball final between Chippingdale CC and Brighton and Hove CC, with Chipps the victors. Simultaneously, the main pitch saw the first women's final, the T20 format, contested between Ansty CC and Brighton & Hove CC, with Ansty coming out on top.
The under 11 softball final was won by St Andrews CC (who are new to the league this year) after scoring 305 and beating last years champions, Chippingdale CC.
In the afternoon the last junior club final took place, the under 13 hardball final between Chippingdale CC and Eastbourne CC. Chipps went home with their second trophy of the day after beating Eastbourne convincingly.
The final match of the day was the Womens 40 over cup between Ansty CC and Hastings & St Leonards Priory CC, who were looking to make amends after last year's final defeat.
Hastings batted first and scored an impressive 209 for 2 with a top score of 93 from Megan Janman and a run a ball 53 from Abigail Freeborn.
Hastings bowled tightly and kept Ansty down to 129 for 9 off their 40 overs, with Natasha Maharaj-Newman taking 4 for 36 on their way to victory.
Sussex Cricket Board Community Coach Charlotte Burton said, " The Women & Girls club day is a big event for us. It is a chance to get all the clubs together to celebrate women and girls cricket in Sussex and showcase some strong club cricket as well as holding all the finals in one day. The day went well and was well supported by Sussex CCC, Sussex Cricket Board and the Sussex WCA with a number of players coming to support the day. Many thanks to Christ's Hospital for sponsoring the event."
