School's History Project
As part of the Sussex Cricket in the Community’s initiative “Get Smart” we have linked two important historical milestones in 2014.
The 100 year anniversary of the start of World War I and 175 year anniversary of Sussex County Cricket Club!
As part of our celebrations Sussex County Cricket Club and Juice 107.2 teamed up to run a history project for West Hove junior school, supported by Yes Promo Products Ltd.
34 students from years 5 & 6 were challenged to design an A2 poster, in groups of 4-5, depicting Sussex Cricket over the last 175 years including the periods over World Wars I & II.
All students were invited to take a tour round the Sussex Cricket museum which contains many cricket artefacts, including a display from World War I and II, giving the students the opportunity to collate the information needed to put a poster together. The students then enjoyed a cricket training session put on by our Sussex Cricket coaches!
The competition was closely contested; however representatives from Sussex cricket, Yes Promo Products and Juice 107.2 picked a winner! The winning group was then invited back down to the club for the winner’s ceremony, which was held in front of the club’s new war memorial plaque. The children were presented with medals and prizes from our very own Sid the Shark, and kindly donated by ‘Yes promo products’.
The students then enjoyed a sunny day watching Sussex in the LV= County Championship match against Northamptonshire as well as being interviewed by the presenters on Juice 107.2!
The winning poster has been proudly placed within the Sussex Cricket Museum amongst the surrounding World War I and II memorabilia.
Debbie Tabor, primary school teacher from West Hove junior school wrote a few words about the trip:
‘Thank you for a wonderful visit to the Ground. We had a fantastic day. The variety of the tour, coaching and museum was the perfect mix to keep the children’s attention and keep them interested. The Sussex cricket staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly and everyone made us feel very welcome. I would recommend this experience to other schools. We had such fun’.
