Background
Career:
An attacking batsman and very occasional bowler, Chris started his career at Derbyshire in 1988. After ten seasons at Derby, Chris signed with Sussex in 1998, was awarded the captaincy, and pledged to bring the Championship to Hove within five years (ultimately he did it in six years). He made his international debut in 1998, against South Africa at the Oval (scoring 25), and made his Test debut on the fateful 99-00 tour to South Africa. Since 1999, Chris has captained Sussex to seven trophies in ten years, including three County Championships and a C&G Trophy. In 2008, Chris will lead Sussex for a record eleventh season.
2007 Season:
Chris scored 1030 Championship runs in 15 games at an average of 46.81. Top scored with 193 (from 202 balls) in Sussex’s win over Durham at Horsham. In one-day cricket, he scored 226 runs at an average of just 28.25, with a top-score of 70, and also scored 229 runs at 38.16 in the Twenty20 Cup, with a best of 56* at the Rose Bowl in a 10-over match.
Many agree that Chris’s reflex catch in the slips at Liverpool to dismiss Stuart Law, was the turning-point of the team’s Championship campaign – seven weeks later the Championship trophy was back at Hove.
